Time to load those backpacks and head back to school! The 2008-2009 school year is set to begin. Teachers will report to Dale Jackson on Monday, August 18 and will spend the week in training and preparation for the new year. Students report on Monday, August 25. We welcome all of students to the Career Center and look forward to meeting you.
The Dale Jackson Career Center had several winners at the Texas State Championships on April 2-5 in Corpus Christi. Four DJCC students represented Texas at the SkillsUSA Nationals in Kansas City on June 23-28. Congratulations to Media Technology students Derrick Olsen and Ava Mauriello along with Animation students Elissa Clare and Patrick Owens for competing at nationals.
This summer, Ad Design student Lauren Vinita created a poster that was a finalist for the prestigious SpaceTime Student Competition for Siggraph. Siggraph is an international organization for computer graphics and animation. Lauren's poster entitled Evolve was displayed at the convention at the Staples Convention Center in downtown Los Angeles in the same hall where Pixar, Industrial Light and Magic, and Sony Entertainment had exhibition booths. The work, one of the top four high school works selected, will go on a year long tour of college campuses across the country. (http://education.siggraph.org/students/students/competitions) Animation students Mai Nguyen and Michael Torres had their animated shorts (The Rocket and Toaster-Hand Man) selected as finalists at the BestFestAmerica video festival (www.bestfestamerica.org) sponsored by the San Diego Film Commission. Their short films were screened on August 16 in La Jolla, California. Also, the Animation II group project entitled Blame the Viking placed 3rd at the Student Animation Contest sponsored by A Bunch of Short Guys in June. The short competed against college works and was the only high school work selected by the festival.
