Awards

Many outstanding students have come through the Dale Jackson Career Center Ad Design department. Approximately 90% of the students who study Ad Design at DJCC will go on to take classes in college or art school in graphic design or advertising/marketing. There are so many outstanding award winners that to list them all would be nearly impossible, but a current list of award winners will be posted every year with a Hall of Fame for those who have made it to Nationals. Thus far, we have three Hall of Fame members, all from Flower Mound High School. The first National Hall of Fame member is Zach Taylor, FMHS graduate of 2003. The second National Hall of Fame member is Tam Nguyen, FMHS graduate of 2004. The third National Hall of Fame member is Jackie Nemunaitis, FMHS graduate of 2004.

There have been many State winners over the years, with winners in Best of Show for Projects as well as Advertising Design skills. This year, in addition to participating in SkillsUSA Championships, we will take a cue from some of the other programs in Media Arts and participate in competitions that will put our students in competition with post high school groups as well. DJCC students get scholarships based on the portfolios of work that are produced in class from various schools across the country.

Last year, Calvin Sprague not only won a spot at the State Ad Design Skills competition, he also was awarded the Gold Medal in the National Portfolio competition for high school seniors and received a $25,000 scholarship to the Dallas Art Institute. This is not unusual for DJCC students in the Ad Design department. In fact, the Media Arts at DJCC are well-known for several things; one of those being the opportunity to get great scholarships and earn college credits while still in high school.

Simini Blocker received a full scholarship to study Illustration at Brigham Young University because of her AP Art portfolio with her computer illustrations added while she spent a semester at DJCC Ad Design. Prior to that, Christina Watkins received a $32,000 scholarship in design to Texas Christian University. The list of scholarship recipients is long and seems to be getting longer every year.

The focus of the our department is not only scholarships and awards, but also learning opportunities in the form of public exhibition of work – we have a community Media Arts Review at the end of each spring semester which is a retrospective of all the best student works in Advertising Design, Animation, and Media Tech classes. We also visit advertising agencies and college shows and campuses. We like to emphasize community/school involvement as well, and we give chances to do community service projects which help out not only our local non-profits but add to the college resume.
