Competitions

The Mill and Cabinetmaking department at the Dale Jackson Career Center has enjoyed a long history of success. One of the major events each year is the SkillsUSA competition.

SkillsUSA-VICA prepares America's high performance workers. It provides quality education experiences for students in leadership, teamwork, citizenship and character development. It builds and reinforces self-confidence, work attitudes and communications skills. It emphasizes total quality at work, high ethical standards, superior work skills, lifelong education and pride in the dignity of work. SkillsUSA-VICA also promotes understanding of the free enterprise system and involvement in community service activities.
The organization was founded in 1965 as the Vocational Industrial Clubs of America, Inc. (VICA). It was founded by students and teachers who were serious about their professions and saw the need for more training in the areas of leadership to complement their chosen vocation. In Nashville, Tennessee, 14 states were represented, as VICA chose it's name, colors, motto, purposes and goals. To better reflect the country's work force in the 21st century, VICA officially changed to SkillsUSA-VICA on July 4, 1999.
The Technology Student Association (TSA) is a national non-profit organization devoted exclusively to the needs of elementary, middle and high school students with a dedicated interest in technology. Assisting TSA's student members is a strong support system of educators, alumni, parents and business leaders who believe in the importance of a technologically literate society. Many of the Manufacturing Systems students compete each year at TSA.
